5 Stars!
This evening marks the 5th time this week that i've used Biofreeze Gel. I have bad joint and muscle pain, brought on by having Haemophilia since i was born, so i really needed something i could use day to day to relieve my pain.
I've been applying the gel to my legs, starting about 6 inches above my knee and working my way down accross the knee, down to my calf muscles. Here's my current observations after using this product for about a week:
Its cold when it comes out of the tube, and it doesnt feel like it warms up when you hold it in your hand. I understand the product is meant to produce a 'freezing' and 'cooling' effect, hence the name Biofreeze, but it really is very cold when you first put it on.
It also has a menthol type smell to it, but i noticed that its a vanishing scent, as in it dissapears not long after you apply it.
After applying the Gel, the skin feels a little sticky for a couple of minutes, but after the gel dries in this stickyness goes away, which is good expecially if your wearing it under your clothes. After applying, Biofreeze has a continual cooling and soothing effect that is pretty constant for around 3 hours. After that the effect wears off over time, but you can still feel it working and relieving pain for a good 4-5 hours after application.
In contrast to some other products i've tried - 'Joint Flex' being one of them, Biofreeze definately produces a much stronger numbing feeling, and you get the feeling that the soothing effect is penetrating deep into the affected area.
For me, Biofreeze certainly relieves a great deal of pain in my knee's and the surrounding muscles, for a period of time that makes going about my day a lot easier. The way it works for me just now means that i can effectively reduce and skip my normal doses of prescription painkillers, which is a good thing, as they make me drowsy and its hard to lead a normal life when you are walking about like a zombie all day. Biofreeze is certainly a more effective alternative, as i can do my daily routine, including driving, without any of the drawbacks of stronger prescription drugs... and the pain relief is just as good.
As thus, so far, i highly recommend this product, expecially if you have certain areas of your body that consistently ache or throb. I particularly hate having to tie or hold on ice packs, which then melt and have to be re-frozen, so biofreeze is a great alternative that lasts a lot longer as well. Biofreeze doesnt make my skin 'red' like normal ice packs does, and i don't have that half frost bitten feel either.
Pro's:
- Works well on specific areas of pain on the body
- Lasts a lot longer than an ice pack (4-6 hours solid) and doesnt carry the drawbacks and inconveniences ice packs have.
- Just as effective, if not more effective, than painkillers. Doesnt make you drowsy either so you can drive and go about your day as normal.
- Doesnt feel uncomfortable once applied, and doesn't stick to clothes.
- Menthol smell vanishes a few minutes after applying.
- Soothes, Cools and Numbs affected areas, effectively covering up the pain.
- Not too expensive, if you buy biofreeze in bulk like me, you save a LOT of money than just buying one tube at a time.
Con's:
- can be expensive if your just buying like 4oz at a time, i'd recommend you buy in bulk if your going to use biofreeze a lot. (check above link for box of 12)
- The gel format of the treatment may not be convenient for some people as it takes a few minuts to rub in, and a couple more to dry. However, you can now get Biofreeze Spray, which dries almost instantly and doesnt require you to touch it at all, just spray it on.
- Cold!. While the cooling effect is an essential part of the way biofreeze works, it can be uncomfortable for a few seconds when you first apply it.
